Who May Qualify for Hospice Care?

A patient with a life expectancy of six months or less, if the illness follows its normal course.

A patient whose symptoms are difficult to manage or who needs comfort-focused support.

A patient and family who choose care focused on quality of life, dignity, and emotional support.

A physician determines that hospice care may be appropriate.
Coverage Options
Medicare Coverage
Medicare beneficiaries who elect hospice can may receive comfort and medical care and supportive services related to their terminal illness, often with little to no out-of-pocket cost.
Medicaid Coverage

Medicare Hospice Coverage Responsibility
All services, treatments, hospital stays, medical equipment, supplies, and medications related to the hospice diagnosis are provided by and must be authorized by the hospice interdisciplinary team for Medicare to maintain financial responsibility.

An individualized care plan based on the patient’s goals of care is created by the hospice care team and the patient’s physician. Starting hospice as early as possible helps ensure that the patient and family receive the maximum benefit allowed.
